Airfoil Design

What?

• Create a pipeline to generate and validate airfoil polars for simulation • Integrate XFLR5, XFOIL, and polar2afl into one repeatable flow • Customize Airfoil Maker parameters for flaps and stall behavior • Validate in-sim with iterative flight-testing and comparisons • Reduce manual data processing and file conversion time

How?

• Script XFOIL/XFLR5 runs; automate polar extraction and cleanup • Convert to `.afl` with polar2afl; verify parameters in Airfoil Maker • Tune lift, drag, and moment curves; compare to reference datasets • Fly test scenarios to check performance envelopes and stability • Use Excel templates and macros to eliminate repetitive steps

Results

• ≈20% improvement in aerodynamic accuracy vs reference data (reported) • ≈6% improvement in flight dynamics after curve adjustments • Significant reduction in manual processing time through automation • Reproducible `.afl` files across multiple airfoils • Clear validation workflow for future airfoil additions
